Charmaine specialises in family and employment law, although she has a broad common law background. Alongside her busy practice, Charmaine is active in the wider legal community. She is particularly passionate about access to justice and equality and diversity at the Bar. Through Bridging the Bar, Charmaine mentors aspiring barristers from underrepresented groups. She also sits on Advocate’s Young Bar Executive Committee and Chambers’ Equality & Diversity Committee. In 2021, Charmaine was nominated for Young Pro Bono Barrister of the Year at the Bar Pro Bono Awards.

Family Law

Public Children Law

Charmaine has expertise in complex care proceedings, including where there is an international element or allegations of serious harm and abuse. She is particularly adept at handling dense medical evidence having recently been led in two lengthy NAI fact-finding hearings by Gemma Farrington KC and Mark Chaloner, respectively.

Private Children Law

Charmaine regularly represents parents in intractable contact disputes, including where a Guardian has been appointed. She has particular expertise in cases where there are allegations of high-risk domestic abuse and/or cross-cultural elements. Recently, Charmaine successfully represented a mother in a multi-day fact-finding hearing where all five allegations of domestic abuse were proven and all five counter-allegations were dismissed.

Financial Remedies

Charmaine has a growing financial remedies practice. She has represented clients at all stages of financial proceedings from the First Appointment up to and including Final Hearing. Charmaine is regularly approached to advise on issues such MPS and applications under Schedule 1 of the Children Act 1989.

Employment Law

Charmaine represents both claimants and respondents in a variety of employment matters, including discrimination, whistleblowing, breach of contract, redundancy and unfair dismissal. Earlier this year, she was led by Jude Shepherd in Sigismund v Financial Conduct Authority 3200833/2019 (read the judgment here). More recently, she successfully represented the respondent in a breach of contract claim (Watkins v Lloyds Bank plc 2200644/2022).
